Driven by low-carbon policies, China’s new energy vehicle industry has achieved leapfrog development, with simultaneous iterative upgrades in complete vehicle technologies and supporting charging infrastructure. Over the past decade, new energy vehicles have evolved from niche pilot models to mainstream market products. The national ownership volume has exceeded 44 million units, accounting for over half of new car market penetration. Battery cruising range and electronic control systems keep improving, while hybrid and pure electric models fully cover household, freight and commercial vehicle scenarios.
The supporting charging pile industry has also expanded at a rapid pace. China has built the world’s largest charging network, with a total of more than 21 million charging devices, including public fast-charging piles and residential private charging piles. The coverage rate of charging piles at highway service areas stands at nearly 97%, and urban-rural energy replenishment networks are increasingly well-developed. Continuous technological innovations have shifted the industry from traditional slow charging to liquid-cooled high-power ultra-fast charging. New-generation ultra-fast piles can fully charge vehicles in just over ten minutes, greatly alleviating range anxiety.
The industry has shifted from extensive station construction to refined operation. Integrated solar-storage-charging systems and Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) vehicle-grid interaction technologies have been put into practical use. Charging piles are no longer merely for vehicle energy replenishment; they can transmit power back to the grid via vehicle-mounted batteries, serving as mobile energy storage units for the new power system. Major automakers have gradually opened their proprietary charging stations to realize interconnection of charging equipment and boost resource utilization efficiency. Moving forward, alongside the development of the new power system, new energy vehicles and charging piles will achieve in-depth integration, continuously advancing green transportation and energy transition.
